Public reaction of 7Arte
Last week, a group of 10 selected students, working together under the guidance of artist Driton Selmani, conceptualized and constructed an artwork that fundamentally expressed the need to protect the rivers of Mitrovica, which now, more than ever, hold vital importance for us. The piece was installed along the promenade near the Ibar River yesterday and, on the same day (late in the evening), it was intentionally set on fire with the aim of destroying it. It seems almost allegorical that a work created to raise environmental awareness and encourage action to protect the rivers was burned, causing further harm to the environment.
The cultural organization 7Arte strongly condemns and expresses its profound concern over this act of violence against a piece of art, likely stemming from a deep misunderstanding of its purpose. We will turn to the relevant administrative and judicial authorities to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable by law.
This act, although regrettable, makes the artwork even more powerful as it once again underscores that the language of art is direct and provocative, peeling back the layers of prejudice of those responsible for such heinous acts of vandalism.
We reiterate our unwavering belief in freedom of expression, deeply recognizing the longstanding support for freedom (including artistic freedom) as a guiding principle in the lives of the citizens of Mitrovica.
We regard this violent act against the artwork as cowardly, driven by narrow-minded prejudice and outdated perspectives, and we regret this manifestation of a mindset that does not reflect the values of our people.
