Green Talks: “Effects of Toxic Pollution on the Sitnica River”

As part of Green Fest 15, the discussion “Effects of Toxic Pollution on the Sitnica River” brought together voices from activism and science. MSc. Arif Kadriu, a dedicated activist and fisherman, shared personal experiences and called for the protection of waterways, while MSc. Hysni Beqiri, a geologist with over 20 years of experience at the Trepça enterprise, provided a scientific perspective on the impact of the mining industry and heavy metal pollution on aquatic ecosystems.

As a fisherman and someone who is near our rivers every day, I have seen with my own eyes that the rivers are dying,” emphasized Kadriu. He explained that fish species are decreasing daily, while water quality is declining due to industrial and wastewater discharge. Riverbeds are covered with plastics and waste, which not only prevent the survival of aquatic life but also create barriers that suffocate the water and reduce oxygen levels.

Beqiri, on the other hand, explained that heavy metals released from mining and industrial processes penetrate rivers, harming biodiversity and threatening public health. These substances remain in ecosystems for long periods and bioaccumulate through the food chain, causing long-term consequences for both nature and humans.

Both speakers stressed that the situation requires urgent action. Kadriu concluded with a strong appeal:

The construction of a water treatment plant is essential for Mitrovica – and it must happen as soon as possible, before it’s too late and our rivers die permanently.
